When designing your home, there is no escaping the fact that size matters. Or at least the perception of it does.

The harsh reality is that we can’t all afford the six bedroom mansion. Therefore, it’s imperative that you learn to do more with the space that is available. Here’s how you can do it in five easy steps.

1. Get Organised

Firstly, a cluttered and unorganised property will leave the home feeling smaller. To avoid this claustrophobic atmosphere, you must first lose any unnecessary items. Any products can be sold online or via a boot sale. With others, the best option is to send them to a refuse or recycling centre.

In addition to losing unnecessary items, you must make space for those that you keep. Smart storage features, as well as items like using hooks behind doors, can aid the cause. An unmessy home will feel larger.

2- Utilise The Walls

You can’t make rooms physically larger, but you can claw back valuable floor space by using the walls more effectively. Corston wall lights are a great option, saving you from buying bulky bedside units or living room tables. Other popular ideas include using wall-mounted shelves or wall-mounted family artwork.

When working with compact rooms, you may also find that a media wall serves the space well. All of your home entertainment systems remain organised, including cables. And it removes the need for bulky units.

3- Make Every Room Count

Many homeowners complain that they don’t have a bigger home, but then don’t use the rooms they possess. A guest room is currently going underutilised for over 90% of the year. Turning it into a home office, for example, would be far better. Posturite ergonomic office chairs will elevate the comfort and support productivity.

As well as guest rooms, you could consider garage conversions or loft conversions. And if a hidden corner of a room could be turned into something better, like a reading nook, you should take advantage.

4- Go Lighter

If you want to trick the eyes into thinking the home is bigger, let there be light. This can be achieved in several ways. Firstly, dressing the windows in a way that introduces more natural light is ideal. Or you could even install a skylight. Natural light can be reflected around the home through the use of strategically positioned mirrors.

It is also worth using lighter colour schemes in your decoration plans. When you do, rooms feel bigger and brighter.  This can change your perceptions of the space, as well as your mood. Painting walls or changing cushion covers could work wonders.

5- Do More With Outside Spaces

The success of a home isn’t defined solely by what’s inside the four walls. Creating the perfect outdoor living space is an ideal project. Aside from the direct benefits gained, you should find that it removes pressure from internal rooms. As well as dedicated outdoor living spaces, you may also wish to consider a garden room installation.

Either way, using the backyard to bring a new dimension to the property is highly rewarding. Your home will feel bigger and better while spending more time outside makes you happier in the process. What more could you ask for?
